Renault-Nissan appoints Jayakumar David as Alliance HR Director in India

The Renault-Nissan Alliance announced the appointment of Jayakumar David as Alliance HR Director, India, effective 1st November 2017. David currently serves as Vice-President HR RNTBCI (Renault Nissan Technology and Business Centre India) and will continue with this role as well.

In his new role, David will be responsible for all the Alliance HR operations in India, ensuring optimum effectiveness, while driving efficiencies of HR delivery to strengthen the Renault-Nissan synergies in India.

Announcing the new appointment, Dominique Dumoulin, Alliance Global Director HR, Africa-Middle East-India (AMI) Region, said: “We are pleased to welcome Jayakumar David in his new role and extend our full support to him in successfully executing his mandate, as we aspire to strengthen the Renault-Nissan Alliance in India. At the same time, we are grateful to Christophe Dalby who has been instrumental in implementing and developing the Alliance HR in India for the past 4 years, and will now move to the headquarters. David will be based in Chennai, reporting to Sumit Sawhney, Country CEO and Managing Director Renault India Operations, and Thomas Kuehl, President Nissan India Operations, with a functional reporting to Dominique Dumoulin, Alliance HR Director, AMI Region. He will also report to Krishnan Sundararajan, Managing Director RNTBCI for specific entity related activities.  

A post-graduate in Human Resources Management from Madras University, David comes with rich experience in Human Resources spanning over 24 years. He has worked with organizations like Kennametal India Pvt. Ltd., Siemens Technology and Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and Hindustan Coca-Cola beverages Pvt. Ltd., and joined RNTBCI in September 2016.

‘Team India’ to compete at BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2018 in Mongolia

The first BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy India qualifier came to a close, after three days of training, riding, adventure and a spectacular finale on October 29, 2017. With the competition still in the balance right up to the final round of qualifiers, it was an adrenaline gushing finish with the best three emerging victorious to represent ‘Team India’.
Mr. Sanket Shanbhag from Satara, Mr. Suprej Venkat from Coimbatore, and Mr. Winston Lee from Mumbai emerged as the BMW Motorrad ‘Team India’. All three BMW GS riders will go on to make BMW Motorrad India history by forming the first team from India to enter the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy, the sixth edition of which will take place in Mongolia in 2018.

The first two days at the GS Trophy qualifier in India started with the training of GS riders and Indian national qualifier of BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy. The final day concluded with the announcement of ‘Team India’ winners. Throughout the duration of the GS trophy qualifier in India, there were range of exhilarating on and off-road challenges held over two competition days like slalom, parallel logs, walk the bike over stones, stop in a slope, coffee grinder, elephant turn, tyre mamba, slow race, walk a circle, the garage as well as practical, teamwork and navigation tests around the region.
A nationwide search earlier this year for a trio of GS riders to form a team to contest the International GS Trophy finals produced staggering applications by riders across India, all keen to show that they had exactly what’s needed to represent their country – in the most famous competitive off-road customer motorcycling event in the world. Challenges across the International GS Trophy qualifier included skill test on parallel log, slalom, riding on log, garage, hill climbs, descents, truck tyres, water crossing, braking downhill, sand passage and offset parallel log.
The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2018 will be held in Mongolia for 10 days: 7 days riding + 2 days in- and outbound journey + 1-day briefing). These lucky – talented – three will be fully equipped by BMW Motorrad for the adventure ahead, flown to Mongolia and each presented with a brand new personalized BMW GS motorcycle to ride for the duration of the event. Team India will compete against other teams from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Latin America, Mexico, Russia, Southeast Asia, South Africa, South Korea, the UK and the US.
The GS Trophy is not a race, but the special stages confront the participants with a major physical and mental challenge: often described as the adventure of a lifetime. It is a competition wherein riders enjoy a near-2000km adventure ride, mostly ridden off-road. Along the way they compete in a series of challenges that are consistent with the BMW GS lifestyle and designed to exercise their intellectual, riding and navigation skills, their knowledge of, and ability to live in, the natural world – and their ability to come together as a team.

LANXESS offers new halogen-free, flame-retardant polyesters and polyamides

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS is expanding its portfolio of halogen-free, flame-retardant compounds based on polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyamide (PA 6, PA 66). “In terms of properties and processing, our new materials are on par with, or even superior to, their counterparts containing halogen-based flame retardance packages. We believe that sales of these products will benefit in the future from global trends, such as Industry 4.0, electromobility and digitally networked building systems, household devices and consumer electronics,” explains Alexander Radeck, applications developer in the LANXESS High Performance Materials (HPM) Business Unit.

New additions to the Pocan BFN PBT product line, which previously encompassed materials with 13, 25 and 30 per cent glass fiber reinforcement, include Pocan BFN2502, BFN4221 and BFN6410. Pocan BFN2502 is a non-reinforced material that displays a high elongation at break of over seven per cent despite its halogen-free flame retardance package. It passes the UL 94 standard fire tests of the US testing organization Underwriters Laboratories, achieving the best classification of V-0 (0.4 millimeters). Another advantage is its high tracking resistance of 600 volts (CTI A, Comparative Tracking Index, IEC 60112). “We see good opportunities for this easy-flow material in components requiring high-level, consistent electrical insulation properties and high dimensional stability,” Radeck adds.

Pocan BFN4221 has a glass fiber content of 20 per cent. Like its “sister products”, this compound displays not only high flame retardance attributable to a low tendency toward corrosion in contact with metals, but also good thermal aging resistance and color stability at elevated temperatures, a wide processing window and good suitability for high-contrast laser marking.

Tailored to LED technology

Pocan BFN6410 targets applications in lighting and LED technology. Radeck: “Its light reflection of more than 94 per cent at 450 nanometers is unusually high, meaning that when used as a housing material, it reflects LED light almost entirely.” It also offers high blue light resistance and high lightproofness even at thin wall thicknesses. The material further displays good mechanical behavior and a low tendency to warp. It achieves the best classification in UL 94 fire testing of V-0 (0.75 millimeters).

Good results in GWEPT testing

Furthermore, a PBT compound is currently under development that shows outstanding results in glow-wire testing to IEC 60695-2-10. These tests assess the ignition properties and afterburn behavior of plastics that come into contact with overheated or incandescent metal parts. “Our material proves that not only halogen-based, but also halogen-free flame retardance packages can support good glow-wire resistance levels in PBT compounds,” says Radeck. The new material also achieves very good results in the glow-wire testing of end products (GWEPT, Glow-Wire Flammability Test Method for End Products, IEC 60695-2-11). “This test is very demanding because end products, which can have complex geometries and metal inserts, frequently display less favorable behavior than simple test specimens,” Radeck explains. The new material under development also has the potential to pass the stricter glow-wire tests required under IEC 60335-1 for unattended household appliances (“no flame”).

High laser light transmission

One new product among the halogen-free flame-retardant polyamide 66 grades is Durethan AKV30FN04LT. It is optimized for laser transmission welding, a process increasingly used for joining electrical and electronic assemblies because it is associated with only limited thermal loading and is dust-free. In the color black, the material’s light transmission in the standard wavelength range for laser welding is still over 50 per cent at a wall thickness of 1.5 millimeters. This ensures a high and rapid delivery of heat input during welding. The joint area melts faster for more cost-effective production. “The polyamide 66 has a flame retardance package whose components display hardly any tendency towards blooming, meaning that virtually no deposits form on the mold surface during injection molding,” Radeck explains. The compound contains the XTS3 heat stabilization system and therefore can be used at higher continuous service temperatures. It passes UL 94 standard fire testing with the best classification of V-0 (0.4 millimeters) and achieves high tracking resistance of 600 volts in tests to IEC 60112. One of its potential applications is safety switches.

Albert Sedlmaier awarded China’s Highest Honor to Foreign Experts

Albert Sedlmaier, Managing Director of data M Sheet Metal Solutions GmbH from Germany, has been awarded with the People’s Republic of China Friendship Award for his work as a technical adviser. On September 29, the prize was given to 50 experts who contributed to the economic and social development of China. The Friendship Award is the highest Chinese honor granted to a foreigner.

In the market segment of design and simulation software for roll formers, the company data M is world leading with its COPRA product family. Besides his role as a businessman, managing director Albert Sedlmaier is acting as a technical adviser at the Jinan Foundry and Metalforming Machinery Research Institute that has also nominated him for the Award. Albert Sedlmaier is delighted with the accolade: “This Award is an honor for me, but also for every staff member at data M and our region.”

With innovative CAE technologies, the software specialist data M is a pioneer in the field of roll forming and has been targeting the world market from the start. As early as 1991 Sedlmaier established a business and academic collaboration with Dr. Liu, Professor at North China University of Technology at the time. For the past 26 years, the two experts built up a nationwide network, trained specialists and introduced new technologies to the Chinese market.

However, the collaboration extends far beyond the field of software. At present, the company from Bavaria is working together with a Chinese machine builder in flexible roll forming based on a patent license. The data M machine allows the production of profiles with discontinuous cross sections for the first time. The company also developed another 3D roll forming machine for prototypes that can produce profiles from batch size 1, which makes it particularly useful for research institutes and automotive suppliers.

LANXESS Urethane Systems will enhance research on next generation materials

The Urethane Systems business unit of specialty chemicals company LANXESS decided to join the Center for UMass/Industry Research on Polymers (CUMIRP) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA, in order to enhance its scientific research on next generation materials. CUMIRP acts as a cross-roads where university research and education meet with industrial partners in polymer materials, engineering and processing to leverage resources and foster collaboration. LANXESS will join Flammability Cluster (Cluster F) and Mechanical Properties & Additive Manufacturing Cluster (Cluster M). This collaboration targets the development of novel urethane materials, it focuses on in-depth understating of structure-property relationships to develop new process methods and new chemistries. The collaboration will come into effect on October 2017.

In the long run LANXESS expects cost savings through sophisticated, highly efficient solutions as well as benefits in business competition by using progressive technologies and the recruiting of qualified specialists. Furthermore, access to other companies who could be potential partners and/or customers will be provided.

Polymer research at the highest level

The Polymer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the leading institute on polymer science in the USA and one of the largest academic centers for polymer research in the world, with currently more than 200 scientists, US$24 million in instrumentation and over 600 doctoral degrees awarded.

A key figure in the academic collaboration for Urethane Systems is scientist Alan Lesser from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who is a world expert in deformation and fracture of polymers and composites. His research focuses on strength, durability, and micromechanics of polymer blends and composites, nano and molecular composites, constructive modeling of polymers in complex stress states as well as unique processing methods and multi-functional additives. As of 2016, the group is focusing on next-generation Additive Manufacturing formulations. Furthermore, Lesser is editor-in-chief for the technical media Polymer Engineering and Science Journal, Polymer Composites, and Journal of Vinyl & Additives Technology.

The previous relationship, under the roof of Chemtura, which was taken over by the LANXESS Group in April 2017, comprised targeted research in flame retardants and urethanes structured foams.

Cooper signs MoU with GRSE for development of diesel engines for Indian Navy & Coast Guard

Cooper Corporation, one of India’s leading engine manufacturers, entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Government of India Undertaking – Under Ministry of Defence, for joint development and manufacturing of small and medium diesel engines for marine applications.

The MoU was signed recently by Mr. Sarvjit Singh Dogra, Director Finance on behalf of GRSE, and Mr. Farrokh N. Cooper, Chairman and Managing Director, Cooper Corporation. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr. Dilip Kumar Jagattar Singh, DGM (I/C-DEP), CDR, Mr. Gaurav Pande, Regional Officer - Mumbai and Mr. VD Sivakumar, Corporate Head - Marketing & Sales, Cooper Corporation.

This collaboration aims at setting up a fully indigenous product line of marine diesel engines specifically designed and developed for Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, a home-grown alternative to multinational brands currently available in the market. Cooper Corporation will helm the design & manufacture of these diesel engines for marine DG set application, ranging from 50 KW – 500 KW. GRSE will integrate these DG set at their Diesel Engine Plant (DEP) at Ranchi and subsequently sell it to their prospective customers – Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Shipbuilders in India and abroad.

Highlighting the significance of this association, Mr. Farrokh Cooper said: “It’s a very proud moment for us to be associated with Government of India – Ministry of Defence and a big achievement for a company which has graduated from cast iron engine components to contemporary engines. Mahindra presents the New KUV100 NXT

Renault CAPTUR delivers the next level of drive experience enabled by the OneIntegration concept, Renault’s design approach that seamlessly connects car and driver. Through the use of high-end smart cabin design technologies, the car feels at one with the driver in an intuitive, intelligent way.

Safety is of paramount importance for Renault CAPTUR and the car is certified to exceed frontal and lateral crash test parameters. With a reinforced body for optimum safety, Renault CAPTUR is equipped with a host of active and passive safety features including dual airbags, side airbags, Antilock-Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) & Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Hill Start Assist.

In addition, it will also come with a Cruise Control feature that helps maintain a pre-selected speed without acceleration and a Speed Limiter, which restricts speed within limits selected by the driver. It will also have 2 lateral ISOFIX fixtures with top-tether in the rear seat for enhanced child safety.


Renault CAPTUR will come with both petrol and diesel powertrains. For the petrol option, it will be powered by the 16 valves 4 cylinder 1.5L H4K petrol engine mated to a 5 speed manual gear box, producing 106 PS at 5,600 rpm and 142 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The diesel version will be powered by the 1.5L K9K diesel engine (common rail injection), mated to 6 speed manual gear box, delivering a maximum power of 110 PS at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 240 Nm at 1,750 rpm.


Renault CAPTUR takes personalization to a completely different level. Every aspect of the car has been designed keeping this in mind, led by a wide range of fashion-inspired dual tone body colours. Renault will also offer the option of further enhancing both the car’s interior and exterior with 2 innovative themed personalization packs – Diamond Deck and Urban Connect, which are the result of a collaboration between Renaults design studios in India and France. Tata Elxsi partnership with National Instruments for automotive system validation

Tata Elxsi, a leading automotive technology and engineering services company, announced a global partnership with National Instruments, the leader in test, measurement and control solutions. John K. Paul re-elected as President of FADA

At the Council Meeting held immediately after the 53rd AGM in New Delhi on October 5, Mr. John K. Paul was unanimously re-elected as the President of Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) for 2017-18.

Managing one of the larger groups engaged in retail automobile trade in India, Mr. John Paul is the Managing Director of Popular Vehicles and Services Ltd., Prabal Motors Private Ltd., and Director of various other Group Companies.

Mr. John Paul is the Managing Trustee of Kuttukaran Foundation running the Kuttukaran Institute for Human Resources Development. He is an Engineering Graduate from the Regional Engineering College, Calicut. He was the President of the Kerala Chamber of Commerce & Industry for 2005-06. He is also former President, TiE-Kerala as well as Former Member of Board of Trustees, TiE Global. He was the President of both the Kerala Hockey Association and the Ernakulam District Hockey Association in the past.

Mr. John Paul is also currently the President of Kerala Automobile Dealers Association. He has been actively associated with FADA for the last 7-8 years and was Hony Secretary during 2012-13 & 2013-14 and Vice President during 2014-15 & 2015-16. He was the first automobile dealer from Kerala to have been elected last year as President of FADA since its inception in 1964.

At the same meeting, Mr. Ashish Kale and Mr. Vinkesh Gulati were re-elected as Vice President and Hony Secretary, respectively. Mr. Manish Raj Singhina was elected Hony Treasurer for 2017-18.

Mr. Ashish Kale is the Managing Director of Provincial Automobile, one of the oldest dealerships in the country, based out of Nagpur. Provincial Automobile has been in the Auto Retail Business since 1930 and is one of the oldest Channel Partners of Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. for their Auto and Tractor Divisions, having been associated with the Group since 1954.

The Group also has franchise for Bharat Benz range of Trucks and Buses for the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions. It operates dealership of Nissan Motors India Ltd. for Vidarbha region, as well. In addition, the Group is engaged in multi-locational Used Cars Business as franchisee of Mahindra First Choice Wheels in the region and as Dealers for Mahindra Construction Equipments for Vidarbha, Marathwada and Mumbai regions.

Mr. Ashish Kale is also MD of Provincial Insurance Broking, which is an IRDA Certified General Insurance Brokerage firm, having offices in Nagpur, Bhopal, Pune and Mumbai. He is President of Vidarbha Automobile Dealers Association as well.

Mr. Ashish Kale has been a Managing Committee Member of Central Provinces Club Nagpur in the past and is an active Member of Rotary Club of Nagpur, Vidarbha Cricket Association, Gondwana Club and Vidarbha Economic Development Council. He has been actively associated with FADA for the past 7 years and has been a Member of FADA Council for the last 5 years.

Mr. Vinkesh Gulati is a Law Graduate and has done Masters in Commerce and Masters in Business Management. He is Managing Partner of United Automobiles, one of the largest selling Bajaj 2W dealerships in India and also deals in Mahindra Automotive. He has been regularly recognized by Mahindra and is the member of M&M Dealer Council.

He is the Senior Vice President of United Group of Institutions having educational institutions in Allahabad and Greater Noida, imparting Engineering, Management, & Computer Science degrees.

Gulati is the Director in United Bharat, Hindi Daily Newspaper, having circulation in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. He is the Chapter Chairman of Indian Industry Association. He was President of Allahabad Automobile Dealership Association during 2010-12. He has been actively associated with FADA for the last 9 years.

Mr. Vinkesh Gulati was Hony Treasurer of FADA from January 11, 2016 to September 22, 2016, and has been continuing as Hony Secretary since September 23, 2016. He is also a member of Governing Council of Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC), jointly promoted by SIAM, ACMA and FADA.

Mr. Manish Raj Singhania is the Managing Partner of Ralas Motors based in Raipur, which is one of the largest dealerships, engaged in sales, service and spares of the entire range of vehicles manufactured by Mahindra & Mahindra and Mahindra Trucks and Buses Ltd. Possessing B.Com and MBA degrees, he is also engaged in agriculture land and real estate business. FORTUM and NBCC unveil the Charging Station for Electric Vehicles in Delhi

Fortum Oyj, a leading Finnish clean energy company in which Government of Finland owns 50.8% shares, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NBCC (India) Ltd., a Navratna Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for developing charging infrastructure across India in all upcoming NBCC construction projects. The MoU was signed by Mr. Arto R├Ąty, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs & Communications of Fortum, and Mr. Yogesh Sharma, Executive Director from NBCC. This MoU will cover all major activities in value chain from planning and designing to making investment and operating the infrastructure using cloud based system.

As a first step, Fortum has installed one 22 KW AC Charger on pilot basis in New Moti Bagh Colony maintained by NBCC, which shall be operated using Fortum’s cloud-based system. The charging station was inaugurated by Finland’s Minister for Housing, Energy and the Environment, Mr. Kimmo Tiilikainen, in the presence of Dr. Anoop Kumar Mittal, Chairman cum Managing Director, NBCC.

Mr. Kimmo Tiilikainen said: “India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. While the rapid growth puts strain on the environment, it also opens extensive opportunities. Technological expertise of Finnish companies can be leveraged to support the sustainable development of Indian economy and energy sector. We are really happy to see Finnish companies bringing in their best technology and solutions to India.”

Speaking during the launch, Mr. Arto Raty, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs & Communications, Fortum Oyj, said: “India is an important market for us. Fortum is a pioneer in providing charging solutions to electric vehicles. Solutions with reliable hardware and software as well as responsive customer support are crucial to the end user experience. We have developed Fortum Charge & Drive to meet these demands, paving the way for the more widespread and efficient use of electric vehicles.”

“Currently, India has about 6,000 electric cars operational and keeping in mind, the Indian government’s target to have only e-vehicles by 2030, Fortum has ventured in India making it the first country outside Europe in the Charge & Drive space. The plans include developing charging infrastructure along with the cloud based system (SAAS). Starting with this pilot in New Delhi, we plan to roll out more than 150 charging stations over a period of next 12-18 months,” says Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal, Managing Director, Fortum India, during the launch of the pilot program.

The charger installed is equipped with OCPP 1.5 and GPRS communication system. The charger is of IP54 Class making it suitable to be operated outdoor. It has two charging points which will enable two cars to be charged at one point. Charger will operate on AC mode. The charging station can be operated using RFID or Mobile App using Fortum cloud system.
